Those maddening creatures of doubt and cynicism, nagging and worrying and whispering, keeping you up at night with their incessant what-if-ing, standing in the shadows at the foot of the bed. They’ll bite your nails, and race bowling balls down the stairs. They’ll lure ants and spiders into the house. They’ll raid your fridge and rifle through your things, and track mud on the carpet (and sometimes the ceiling.) God help you if you happen to keep a drum kit or piano around, because they like uproar and noise even more than they like unbearable silence. They’ll borrow your toothbrush, and wear your best clothes to go swimming in. They get along swell with one another, but they’ll start to fight if things get too quiet.


If they see you, and like you, they’ll follow you home. Simple as that.
